Abstract

New nonionic Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylate (FAEO) surfactant is prepared by the interaction of Vegarol 1214 (Lauryl myristyl alcohol) with specific units (n = 30) of ethylene oxide (EO) gas that is appointed as LMAEO-30 and its structure is characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectra. Also, the characteristics of surface activity are determined by surface tension measurements to know the critical micelle concentration (CMC) which equals to 2.48 × 10–5 M. The result is used to identify its maximum concentration to be used in the inhibition of corrosion of carbon steel (CS) in a HCl medium. The inhibitive action of LMAEO-30 is determined using mass loss (ML), potentiodynamic polarization (PP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) methods. The efficiency of this surfactant depends on both concentration and temperature. The values of Gibbs free energy (ΔGoads) (37.8–39.4 kJ mol−1) indicate that LMAEO-30 is adsorbed on CS surface physico-chemically. The results indicate that LMAEO-30 exhibits very good corrosion inhibition at 2.48 × 10–5 M and the inhibition efficiency reached to 83.5%. The polarization data indicate that the tested surfactant affects both cathodic and anodic reactions (mixed kind). The surfactant is adsorbed on CS surface following Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The morphology of the surface of (CS) samples are analyzed using atomic force microscope (AFM).
