From History to Histology: The Case Correlation Assignment

Abstract

This report describes novel uses of a writing assignment in which senior veterinary students incorporate general pathology, histology, and anatomy to explain clinical data from a deceased, previously hospitalized veterinary case. The resulting papers generated by the senior students have been used to help teach veterinary students in preclinical, didactic courses. The use of these papers continues to evolve.

The author gratefully acknowledges the assistance and guidance given over the years by Dr. Jared Danielson on the CCA project. This project could not continue without the on-going efforts of the departmental faculty, who take photomicrographs of the histology images and advise VM4 students on how to correlate necropsy findings to clinical data. In addition, the histopathology lab staff and medical records staff have diligently pulled slides and case records for this project on a recurrent basis for over a decade.
