Cardiovascular Profiles of Younger and Older Coronary Artery Disease Patients in Asian and Western Regions

  • Published:

Abstract

Purpose of Review

Globally, coronary artery disease (CAD) is the primary cause of death in both younger and older individuals. However, the differences in cardiovascular risk between younger and older patients based on geographical regions were lacking. Hence, this review discusses the unique cardiovascular profiles between younger and older patients with CAD in the Asian and Western populations.

Recent Findings

Despite the prevalent use of ‘premature CAD’, no definite age cut-off for this condition exists. Asian patients seem to develop premature CAD earlier and CAD is conventionally considered a ‘men’s disease’.

Summary

Risk factors of CAD varied between both younger and older patients regardless of geographical regions. Based on the limited evidence, no differences were observed between the Asian and Western populations in terms of disease severity, plaque characterization as well as clinical presentation and electrocardiographic changes. Overall, targeting specific risk factors for early CAD interventions should be performed to allow better disease prevention and prognosis.
