Yuzurua iridescens (M.J. Wynne & D.L. Ballantine) comb. nov. (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta) from the Caribbean Sea: morphological and molecular evidence

Abstract

Specimens of Palisada iridescens (Rhodomelaceae) were studied morphologically and molecularly from the Mexican Caribbean. The phylogenetic position of this species was inferred by analysis of chloroplast-encoded rbcL gene sequences of 42 taxa, using one ceramiacean and four rhodomelacean taxa as outgroups. Molecular phylogenetic results corroborate the taxonomy of Laurencia sensu lato, which comprises the genera Chondrophycus, Laurencia, Laurenciella, Palisada, Osmundea, and Yuzurua. We propose the new combination Yuzurua iridescens (M.J. Wynne & D.L. Ballantine) Sentíes & M.J. Wynne for P. iridescens. We describe and illustrate morphological characteristics of Y. iridescens, comparing it with related species and also inferring its phylogenetic position. Observations on male plants are described for the first time for Y. iridescens.
