Abstract

Landfill is considered as a primary method for disposing of municipal solid waste in numerous countries. This practice carries a significant risk of generating substantial quantities of leachate with harmful and dangerous substances that have negative impacts on both ecosystems and human populations. Therefore, proper treatment is required for the leachates prior to being discharge to the environment. Researchers have applied several techniques for leachate degradation, with varying levels of efficiency, considering leachate characteristics, discharge requirements, technical feasibility, regulations, and financial aspects. However, the conventional treatment processes are not effective in treating landfill leachate due to the high operational expenses involved and the presence of resistant substances in the leachate. Thus, the requirement of an effective and low-cost treatment technique has been arisen. Studies have shown that the use of recycled or waste materials, locally and readily available materials as biofilters in anaerobic bioreactors could be a practical low-cost approach for leachate treatment and promising results have been obtained in removing COD, BOD, nitrogenous compounds, and heavy metals. This article presents that the anaerobic filter reactor technology offers several advantages for landfill leachate treatment. It provides high removal efficiencies for organic pollutants, achieving removal rates of up to 90%. Additionally, the process generates biogas, which can be utilized as a renewable energy source, further enhancing the sustainability of the treatment system.
