Abstract

One of the most important problems is separating and drying the salt in the water stream after purifying sea water. In principle, the dryer can be mentioned as the last step in the purification process. Therefore, the performance of a rotary dryer has been investigated in this study. In other words, the aim of this study is to increase the quality and quantity of salt crystals leaving the dryer. Undoubtedly, the knowledge related to rotary dryers and their inner surfaces should be increased to improve the assessment of their performance. In this study, two groups of rotary dryers are investigated. The first dryer has a nano-inner coating, and the second dryer has a conventional inner coating. Therefore, the effective parameters such as energy consumption, drying time, velocity of hot air in the dryer, evaporated water and qualitative properties of outlet salt crystals from dryers are investigated in this research. The results show that the size range of dry salt crystals leaving the dryer is reduced by about 23.6% if dryer with nano-inner coating is used. Studies show that the amount of energy consumption versus drying times will be reduced about 57% if dryer with nano-inner coating is used. The laboratory results show that it is easier to reach salt crystals with a size range of 600 to 700 µm when using a dryer with nano-inner coating. Also, it is easier to reach whiter salt crystals in this type of dryers.
