Abstract

Chitin and Chitosan are promising biopolymers to be useful in the construction of electrochemical hybrid devices. As evident in biominerals, chitin plays important roles to stabilize layered structures and chitosan has the capability to form a gel. In this paper, we review the recent research progress on chitin and chitosan in the application of materials science. We also report our observation withá-chitin in the gelation process. A different molecular structure at the nano-level results in a different behavior of gelation. This understanding can provide an important foundation in the application of chitin and chitosan for electrochemical hybrid devices.
