Introduction
This editorial introduces AI Notes as an optional new article type for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly utilised in medical physics, medical imaging, and biomedical engineering. AI Notes are designed to specifically cater to this type of research.
AI Notes are shorter, prescriptive in format, and more concise than traditional papers. This comes about for several reasons:
-
Many papers focussing on AI investigations of various topics follow similar formats. Therefore, a simplified and consistent layout for these papers may be useful to authors and readers.
-
A portion of researchers who work with AI are neurodiverse, thus papers that are less wordy and more focussed may be of assistance to neurodiverse authors and readers.
-
A prescriptive and shortened format will allow authors from non-English speaking backgrounds to better focus on communicating their research (note that requirements for English expression and scientific writing still apply – see Submission Guidelines).
-
The format reduces unnecessary introductory information while retaining citations of relevant literature.
AI Notes in this journal must use the template provided at https://www.springer.com/journal/13246/submission-guidelines. These articles are formatted as follows:
-
A short, prescriptive Introduction.
-
The literature review is truncated into a Table listing previous relevant works.
-
Prescriptive and concise Methodology and Results sections with descriptions of the dataset, model/workflow, training, and evaluation/statistical analysis.
-
A full Discussion.
Full scientific papers using AI are still available for authors who prefer a more traditional layout.
