AACE is sorry to report the passing of Sidney L. Saltzstein MD, a member of AACE for many years and a Past President of the organization. The following obituary was forwarded to AACE from UC San Diego.

The (UC San Diego) Department of Pathology mourns the loss of Sidney L. Saltzstein MD, professor and founding head of the Division of Anatomic Pathology and first Chief of Surgical Pathology at UC San Diego. Dr. Saltzstein passed away on May 31 after a period of declining health.

Following service in the Navy in World War II, Sid received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University, after which he completed his anatomic pathology training at Washington University’s Barnes Hospital. He became the surgical pathologist for the San Diego County Hospital before it was owned and operated by UC San Diego. Thus his service in UC San Diego Pathology preceded that of any other pathology faculty member. He retired in 2002 after 39 years with UC San Diego.

Sid was known for his extraordinary diagnostic abilities, which ran across the spectrum of general surgical pathology. He was also an outstanding teacher and had a wit and sense of humor that were unparalleled. Many of his colleagues and students have a favorite “Sid Story.” His research interests focused on sudden infant death syndrome and on the epidemiology and early detection of cancer. He had a joint appointment at Moores Cancer Center, where he maintained an office until recently, and he was active in the state of California cancer registry for many years.

Following Sid’s and the family’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. However, if you have a “Sid Story,” the family would enjoy hearing it. You can contact the family at saltzsteins@cox.net or mail to 11384 Lorena Lane, El Cajon, CA 92020.
