In the original article, the figure captions for Figs. 1 and 2 were swapped inadvertently. The correct captions with Figs. 1 and 2 are given below.

Fig. 1
figure 1

Field sites and set up of the experiment. After surveying the area, an open grassland site (a) and a woodland/upland site (c) representative of each habitat were marked with ribbons and/or flags that would enable rapid localization of the sites upon return. A cage was placed on the grassland site (b) and woodland/upland (d). The cages contained duplicates of three EMR skins that were separated into individual compartments to prevent cross-contamination

figure 2

Extraction and analysis of DNA from shed skins. (a) Ten μl of isolated DNA were resolved in a 1% agarose gel. DNA extraction was successful for all shed skins. (b) The mean concentration for more than 10,000 bp in size was 2.24 ng/μl for EMR and 2.83 ng/μl for non-EMR. The mean concentration of DNA less than 10,000 bp in size was 145.46 ng/μl for EMR and 130.3 ng/μl for non-EMR. There was no significant difference between EMR and non-EMR concentrations > 10,000 bp (p = 0.62) or < 10,000 bp (p = 0.55) as determined by an independent samples t-test
