The Effect of Heat Treatment on the Preparation of Pt-RuO2/C Electrocatalysts

Abstract

Pt-Ru catalysts supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon powder were synthesized by the polymeric precursor decomposition method. The catalysts were prepared at different temperatures in order to investigate the influence of the calcination temperature on catalyst performance. Structural and morphological characterization was accomplished by X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Thermal decomposition was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis. The electrocatalytic activity was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and single methanol fuel cell tests. The catalytic activity, normalized in relation to the Pt mass, is higher in the case of the catalysts prepared at lower temperatures since higher temperatures promote the particle size increase and the loss of carbon powder.
