Abstract

Influence of the martensitic phase transformations on mechanical behavior of Cu-12.5 wt% Al shape memory alloy has been studied using microhardness measurements, differential thermal analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Results show that microstructure of the alloy is affected by both ageing temperature and time. Consequently, a change in alloy hardness has been observed. It has also been found that the ageing temperature is more effective on both alloy microstructure and hardness than ageing time. It is worth noting that ageing of the alloy sample at 450 °C for 12 h has doubled its hardness compared with unaged sample.
