The specific ways vary, but our efforts at self-justification are all designed to serve our need to feel good about what we have done, what we believe, and who we are (Tavris en Aronson 2007, pag. 51)
Abstract
Self-justifications can seriously harm family relations. Self-justifications are used by perpetrators as well as by victims in disturbed family patterns. Thus, self-justifications of all participants should be unmasked as soon as possible within family therapy. We use the genogram and the Five-columns model: a pragmatic technique to assess specific types of self-justifications, (ab)used by different family members. This technique facilitates the understanding of self-justifications within the context of specific system properties, negative core-cognitions, trauma and resilience of individual family members as well as the system as a whole. Empathic therapeutic responses to the motives underlying self-justifications (particularly guilt and shame) are crucial, without whitewashing them. Psycho-education and training can help system members to ‘overcome’ self-justification and to develop loving and constructive communication.
