Zusammenfassung

Eine im Sommer 2021 entstandene Thinktank-Debatte in den USA illustriert Herausforderungen der westlichen Ostpolitik im Allgemeinen und der US-amerikanischen Ukrainepolitik im Besonderen. Von russischer Propaganda verbreitete Stereotypen einer von Ultranationalismus und Autoritarismus geprägten postsowjetischen Ukraine finden nicht nur in linken, sondern auch anderen politischen Kreisen Anklang. Der vorliegende Essay setzt sich kritisch mit einem aktuellen Beitrag Ted Galen Carpenters auseinander, in dem er die Beendigung der US-Unterstützung für die Ukraine fordert.

Abstract

A think-tank debate in the United States that emerged in the summer of 2021 illustrates challenges to Western policy towards Eastern Europe in general and U.S. policy towards Ukraine in particular. Stereotypes of a post-Soviet Ukraine characterized by ultra-nationalism and authoritarianism spread by Russian propaganda resonate not only in leftist but also in other political circles. This essay critically examines a recent contribution by Ted Galen Carpenter calling for an end to U.S. support for Ukraine.

  2. Um Missverständnissen vorzubeugen: Ich habe zwar wiederholt im Ukraine Alert des Atlantic Council publiziert, war jedoch nie Mitarbeiter dieser Denkfabrik.

  3. Tatsächlich verließ Janukowitsch Kyjiw am 21. Februar 2014, nachdem die Gewalt bereits beendet war. Er wurde am folgenden Tag offiziell von demselben Parlament als Staatsoberhaupt abgesetzt, das ihn zuvor mit großer Mehrheit zwei Jahre unterstützt hatte.

  4. Zwar wurde 1969 der bis dahin amtierende Bundeskanzler Kurt Georg Kiesinger durch Willi Brandt von der SPD ersetzt. Dies war jedoch das Ergebnis eines Wechsels der Regierungskoalition und nicht der Bundestagswahl jenes Jahres, die Kiesingers CDU/CSU eigentlich gewonnen hatte.
