Notes
This paper [4] was published during a particularly difficult time in Norwegian history. The paper appeared in a journal that was immediately accessible to the authors at a time when communication in and out of Norway was almost literally impossible. The 1940 Jansen and Brodal, featured in this CC, was immediately available to the world scientific community even during the war and, consequently, became widely recognized in research circles. Access to the 1942 paper was delayed for a number of years by the war and its aftermath and, as a consequence, was less well-known and less available to researchers. In fact, a footnote in the 1940 paper (p. 297) indicates that a point in a figure was not explained in the text and states “The attention of the authors was called to the discrepancy, but because of the tragic conditions in Norway no reply has been received”.

Additional information
Jansen and Brodal's paper, as originally published in Journal on Comparative Neurology (73:267–321, 1940) was 54 pages in length. This precludes publishing the entire manuscript in print form. To provide the best overview of this important paper in print form, the Introduction (pp. 267–271) and Discussion (pp. 302–316) are reprinted here while the entire manuscript is available on-line at doi: 10.1007/s12311-011-0259-0 (the editors).
