Abstract
Sponges are an important phylum for evolutionary research, for the ecology of aquatic ecosystems and in biotechnology. Research on sponges requires the unambiguous identification of species. This is now facilitated by molecular methods, i. e. DNA barcoding. The aim of the Sponge Barcoding Project is the identification of diagnostic DNA sequences of all sponge species by PCR and DNA sequencing.
