Abstract

In view of the serious environmental pollution caused by organic dyestuff in textile printing and dyeing wastewater, a kind of covalent organic framework (COF) with high water stability—TpPa COF was synthesized by a combination of reversible Schiff-base reaction and irreversible enol-keto tautomerism. The TpPa COF was mechanically blended with chitosan (CS) and was used as a composite adsorbent, i.e., TpPa COF/CS. The aqueous solutions containing acid mordant brown (AMB) dye and methylene blue (MB) dye were employed to simulate anionic and cationic dyeing wastewater, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of TpPa COF/CS composites for the anionic and cationic dyes was investigated and the adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics were studied. The TpPa COF/CS composites (WCOF/WCS: 1/4 and 2/1) exhibited high adsorbing capacities (qmax: 1287.6 and 831.3 mg/g) for AMB and MB dyes at initial pH 4.0 and 9.0, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of both the ionic dyes followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. In addition, the adsorption isotherms of both the dyes fitted well with Langmuir model. The COF/CS composite adsorbent was a promising economical material for the removal of ionic dyes from aqueous solutions.
