Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore gender as a moderator of relationships between pathological narcissism and emotion regulation strategies. Participants (N = 1344) completed an online survey that included the Pathological Narcissism Inventory and the Emotion Regulation of Self and Others questionnaire. Pathological narcissism was associated with greater use of both intrinsic and extrinsic emotion regulation strategies. Women reported greater use of affect-improving strategies, while men indicated higher levels of extrinsic affect-worsening strategies. Gender moderated the relationship between pathological narcissism and both intrinsic and extrinsic affect-improving strategies. Men with higher levels of pathological narcissism may be particularly likely to use affect-improving emotion regulation strategies.
