Neurogenic Bladder Secondary to Congenital Spinal Lesions

Abstract

Neurogenic bladder that results from congenital spinal lesions is an important clinical entity. Unfortunately, the definition of neurogenic bladder is not straightforward. While the literature is plentiful, there are limited long-term outcomes that are known regarding the clinical or surgical management of these patients. There is even controversy regarding the workup and early infant treatment of neurogenic bladder. Without better disease definitions and phenotypes, the management remains non-standardized and the outcomes are not known. Appropriate understanding of the physical and clinical findings observed in this group of patients will help us to better define the risk of progression of disease. The following review and summary of the most recent literature will hopefully decrease some of the confusion and stimulate conversation about the creation and adoption of standards for workup and follow-up.
