Reflections on the Relationship between Education and Archaeology: An Analysis of IPHAN’s Role as Collective Educator

Abstract

This article analyses the role of the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional—IPHAN (the Brazilian Government’s Bureau for Cultural Patrimony Preservation) as an educational institution, considering the relationship between archaeology and education. Consideration of education both as a social practice and as a profession provides a basis for discussing the educational approaches of archaeologists. The authors stress the fact that IPHAN barely takes advantage of the important teaching tool that the archaeological knowledge produced in Brazil can provide for education about Brazilian cultural patrimony.

Resumen

Este artículo analiza la labor del Instituto de Patrimonio Histórico y Artístico Nacional (IPHAN). Este instituto gubernamental brasilero funciona como educador colectivo que considera la relación entre la arqueología y la educación. La perspectiva de la educación como práctica social y la educación como profesión constituye la base de una discusión sobre el enfoque educacional del trabajo de la arqueología. También enfatiza el hecho de que IPHAN raramente toma ventaja del conocimiento arqueológico brasilero como una herramienta importante de reflexión sobre el patrimonio cultural del país.

Résumé

Cet article analyse le rôle de l’Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional—IPHAN (le bureau gouvernemental brésilien pour la conservation du patrimoine culturel) comme un instrument de promotion collectif en considération de la relation entre l’archéologie et l’éducation. L’éducation dans la perspective de la pratique sociale et comme profession constitue la base d’une discussion sur l’approche éducative du travail des archéologues. Nous insistons aussi sur le fait que l’IPHAN prend à peine avantage de la connaissance archéologique produite au Brésil comme un outil important sur la réflexion concernant le patrimoine culturel de ce pays.
