Abstract
The present study is the first quantitative study in Germany to address psychological differences between femicide and viricide offenders with respect to personality and other important treatment-relevant characteristics. An extensive data set from the Bavarian social therapy documentation made it possible to compare 46 femicide offenders with 57 viricide offenders with respect to personality traits (MMPI-2), offense hypothesis, and treatment goals. The comparisons were structured and interpreted in terms of three theoretical perspectives (narratives), namely the feminist narrative (femicide as killing for misogynistic or other gender-related motives by an average man), the violence perspective narrative (femicide as a subset of homicides by men who are more likely to be dissocial and aggressive), and the affect narrative (femicide as conflict killing by a relatively mentally unstable man). Overall, relatively few differences were observed between femicide and viricide perpetrators. Moreover, the results suggest that the characteristics of femicide perpetrators can only be explained by the overall picture of all three narratives. Finally, the implications of the findings for offender treatment, among others, are addressed.
Notes
