Abstract

Therapeutic options for rectal cancer aim to improve local control of the cancer and improve survival rates. However, fecal continence and defecation are impaired in some patients. Unpredictable bowel function may be the factor that impacts most on quality of life. Patients need to be properly informed about possible adverse effects and surgeons need to offer the best options (colonic pouch, sphincter saving procedure) in order to minimize these complaints.
