Abstract
For a century, schizophrenia patients were thought to be insensitive to pain. Despite some positive evidence, this idea is still controversial. However, it is clear that schizophrenia is not a pain insensitivity syndrome. On neurophysiological basis, our group has gathered evidence linking schizophrenia to deficient excitatory pain mechanisms. Further studies are required, especially because insensitivity to pain in schizophrenia seems to be associated with significant functional consequences.
