Abstract

In this work, an innovative biogenic technique was employed to synthesize palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) using propolis. Characterization of the crystal structure and morphology of the prepared NPs was performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis), particle-size distribution and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. At the Pd-NPs modified screen printed electrode (SCPE), the detection of bisphenol A (BPA) through voltammetric measurements was examined. The designed sensor for BPA exhibited remarkable performance, featuring a wide range of calibration (0.2–90 µM), an impressively low limit of detection (LOD, 0.08 µM), and a satisfactory level of reproducibility (RSD = 3.1%). The applicability results also support the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for monitoring of BPA in food samples. On the other hand, the anti-cancer ability of the biosynthesized Pd-NPs versus common human gastric cancer cell line (NCI-N87) was explored. The good cytotoxic character of the green prepared Pd-NPs against gastric cancer in humans was confirmed through the MTT assay studies on cell viability. The findings of this study highlight the successful application of Pd-NPs, which can be easily synthesized from propolis, in both electrochemical sensing and the human cancer therapy.
