Abstract
While the „Asian values“ discourse has been discredited internationally, its state at the domestic level is more complex. Where „Asian values“ have been invoked in support of economic development, such as in Indonesia, financial crisis has been an effective form of critique. But in more economically advanced Singapore and Malaysia claims about distinctive „Asian values“ are likely to continue because they justify authoritarianism despite high levels of development. Drawing on Norbert Elias’s discussion of the critique of Western civilization in favor of German culture in industrialized Imperial Germany, parallels are suggested to the denunciation of „Western democracy“ in the name of „Asian values.“ But the diffusion of democratic ideas as well as the impact of globalization on politics is likely to erode this authoritarian discourse.
