We read with interest the article by Ogawa et al. entitled “Marjolin’s ulcer arising at the elbow: a case report and literature review” [3]. According to the authors, “To our knowledge, there has not been a report describing squamous cell carcinoma arising from the elbow joint” [3]. While going through the references given by author himself, there is a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising from the elbow joint by Sedlin and Fleming in 1963 [4] in case number 8. There are four cases with Marjolin’s ulcer around elbow joint in article by Chowdri and Darzi in 1996 [2]. There was another case of mesenchymal malignancy on Marjolin’s ulcer around the elbow joint by Celikoz et al. in 1997 [1].

It is surprising to us that such an obviously erroneous claim from the author was not picked up during editorial review. The existence of several articles on Marjolin’s ulcer of the elbow prior to the publication of this case report reduces considerably the value of this report, which is obviously no longer unique. We request that the record be set straight by publishing this letter in the interest of maintaining factual integrity.
