Frédéric Barrière, Associate Professor at the University of Rennes, France, is the new Editor-in-Chief of the journal Transition Metal Chemistry. Frédéric takes over as of January 1st, 2023, from previous Editor-in-Chief Martin Lemaire.

Frédéric is a molecular inorganic / organometallic chemist and electrochemist by training. He received his MSc and PhD (1999) from the University of Brest, France, working on the chemical, electrochemical and theoretical modeling of the nitrogenase active site (the FeMo-cofactor). During this time, he also worked in Brighton and Norwich, UK, at the Nitrogen Fixation Laboratory where he met Marcus Durrant [1] the Editor-in-Chief of the journal before Martin Lemaire. He joined the Editorial Board of Transition Metal Chemistry in 2007 and has served until now.

Frédéric was first a postdoc at the University of Vermont, USA, exploring the effects of weakly coordinating anions on the electrochemistry of organometallics, and then at the University of Galway, Ireland, developing enzymatic biofuel cells, especially using a multicopper oxidase laccase enzyme connected to an osmium redox polymer for the reduction of oxygen. He was appointed at the University of Rennes as Assistant Professor in 2002 (Habilitation in 2009) where he has been developing enzymatic and microbial biofuel cells, together with a continued interest in surface modification, metalloproteins, molecular inorganic (electro)chemistry and theoretical modeling.
