A Comparison of Methods for Evaluating the Location of the Best Focusing Planes of Particle Images Reconstructed from Digital Holograms

A method for evaluating the location of the best focusing planes based on an analysis of the boundary contrast and boundary brightness jump of particle images reconstructed from digital holograms is examined. The method is tested using images reconstructed from original (recorded) holograms and those simulated numerically. The method proposed is compared with existing ways of evaluating the location of the best focusing plane. The benefits, limitations, and errors inherent in the method are discussed.
