New Analysis of tert-Butanol Adsorption Data on a Mercury Electrode: The Electrocapillary Measurements

Abstract

A regression technique is used for analyzing electrocapillary curves (ECC) in tert-butanol solutions, which were published earlier. Adsorption of this compound on a mercury electrode from aqueous solutions is shown to correspond in the first approximation to the model of two parallel capacitors. Moreover, to describe experimental ECC, five main parameters of this model are sufficient. It is shown that theoretically calculated isotherms corresponding to a constant electrode charge can be described by equations of the Frumkin isotherm if this charge is not too far removed from the maximum adsorption charge. On the other hand, all parameters of this isotherm depend on the electrode charge, so that the description of a complete series of ECC requires the knowledge of seven adsorption parameters.
