Bridging Cultures and Traditions for Educational and International Development: Comparative Research, Dialogue and Difference

Abstract

Addressing the central theme of the XIII World Congress, the paper explores a number of contemporary theoretical, methodological and organisational developments in the field of comparative education. In doing so it draws upon the author’s recent work and a selection of studies carried out in the South Pacific, the Caribbean and Africa. It is argued that disciplined comparative and international research can contribute much to the development of theory and methodology – as well as to the improvement of policy and practice in education world-wide. For this to be realised it is maintained that ongoing efforts to challenge and ‘reconceptualise’ the field deserve sustained support – and increased attention to a more effective ‘bridging of cultures and traditions’. This ‘bridging’ thesis is examined in greater depth, pointing to possible ways forward for those engaged in advancing the future of comparative research in education and in the social sciences more generally.

Résumé

ÉTABLIR UN PONT ENTRE LES CULTURES ET LES TRADITIONS DANS LA RECHERCHE COMPARATIVE EN ÉDUCATION: DIALOGUE, DIFFÉRENCE ET CONTEXTE – Abordant le thème central du XIIIè Congrès Mondial, l’article examine un certain nombre de dÉveloppements contemporains thÉoriques, mÉthodologiques et d’organisation dans le domaine de l’Éducation comparative. Ce faisant, il utilise des travaux rÉcents de l’auteur et un choix d’Études effectuÉes dans le Pacifique Sud, les Caraïbes et en Afrique. On y affirme qu’une recherche comparative et internationale disciplinÉe peut contribuer pour beaucoup à l’Élaboration d’une thÉorie et d’une mÉthodologie – aussi bien qu’à l’amÉlioration de la politique et de la pratique de l’Éducation dans le monde entier. Pour rÉaliser ceci, on maintient que les efforts continus pour dÉfier et ‘reconceptualiser’ ce domaine mÉritent un soutien constant – et une attention accrue afin ‘d’Établir un pont plus efficace entre les cultures et les traditions’. Cette thèse de ‘l’Établissement d’un pont’ est examinÉe dans le dÉtail, et indique des possibilitÉs d’aller de l’avant à ceux qui s’engagent pour l’avancÉe du futur de la recherche comparative en Éducation et plus gÉnÉralement en sciences sociales.

Zusammenfassung

BRÜCKENSCHLAG ZWISCHEN VERSCHIEDENEN KULTUREN UND TRADITIONEN IN DER VERGLEICHENDEN BILDUNGSFORSCHUNG: DIALOG; DIFFERENZ UND KONTEXT – Bezugnehmend auf das zentrale Thema des XIII. Weltkongresses beschäftigt sich der Artikel mit verschiedenen zeitgenössischen Entwicklungen in Theorie, Methodologie und Organisation im Feld vergleichender Erziehungswissenschaften. Bezugspunkte sind neuere Arbeiten des Autors sowie ausgewählte Studien, die im SÜdpazifik, der Karibik und Afrika durchgefÜhrt wurden. Der Artikel vertritt die Meinung, dass die vergleichende internationale Fachforschung einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur Entwicklung von Theorie und Methodologie sowie zu verbesserten Praktiken im weltweiten Bildungswesen leisten kann. Zur Realisierung dieser Ziele ist es notwendig, die laufenden Anstrengungen im Hinterfragen und in der ‘Neukonzeptualisierung’ dieser Bereiche zu unterstÜtzen und verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit auf einen effektiveren ‘BrÜckenschlag zwischen verschiedenen Kulturen und Traditionen’ zu richten. Diese ‘BrÜckenschlag-These’ wird im einzelnen ausgefÜhrt und mÜndet im Hinweis auf die Möglichkeiten zukÜnftiger Weiterentwicklung in den Sozialwissenschaften im allgemeinen und in der vergleichenden Bildungsforschung im besonderen.

Resumen

CREAR PUENTES ENTRE CULTURAS Y TRADICIONES EN LA INVESTIGACIÓN COMPARATIVA EN EDUCACIÓN: DIÁLOGO, DIFERENCIAS Y CONTEXTO – Dedicado al tema central del XIII Congreso Mundial, el papel explora una serie de desarrollos contemporÁneos teÓricos, metodolÓgicos y organizativos en el Área de la educaciÓn comparada. Al hacerlo, se basa en el trabajo reciente del autor y en una selecciÓn de estudios realizados en el Pacífico Sur, Caribe y África. Según argumenta, una investigaciÓn comparativa e internacional disciplinada puede prestar un gran aporte al desarrollo de la teoría y la metodología, al igual que a la mejora de las políticas y prÁcticas en la educaciÓn a escala mundial. Para que esto se haga realidad, según sostiene el autor, los constantes esfuerzos que se realizan para desafiar y “reconceptualizar” esta Área necesitan un apoyo sostenido y una atenciÓn incrementada para que la “creaciÓn de puentes entre culturas y tradiciones” sea mÁs efectiva. Realiza un anÁlisis profundizado de la tesis de “creaciÓn de puentes”, señalando posibles guías para quienes se hayan propuesto adelantar el futuro de la investigaciÓn comparada en educaciÓn y ciencias sociales a un nivel mÁs general.
