A study is made of kinetic aspects of the thermal degradation of a temporary binder which is used in the production of periclase refractories and has been modified with vitreous molasses. The proportions of molasses and lignosulfonate in the binder are optimized to alleviate crack formation during extrusion and firing and give refractories that are made with the binder superior physico-mechanical properties.
