Two novel tunable ring cavity EDFL designs with pre coupler and NALM for improving OSNR

Abstract

High optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is crucial in EDFLs for enabling wider bandwidth and faster operation of optical systems. This study introduces two novel designs for erbium-doped fiber lasers (EDFLs) aiming to achieve a high OSNR in the 1526–1568 nm range, which has not been previously reported in the literature. The proposed setups were validated using OptiAmplifier 4.0 software. Through experimental observations, it has been determined that the proposed EDFL designs, incorporating a pre-coupler and a pre-coupler with NALM (non-linear amplifying loop mirror), offer higher OSNR values compared to conventional designs. At optimum pump powers (200 mW @1480 nm and 100 mW @980 nm), an average OSNR of 68 dB and 74 dB is obtained for the design with a pre-coupler and the design with a pre-coupler and NALM, respectively.
