Abstract
This paper focuses on a metrical element in Spanish poetry that has received little attention by critics, in spite of its frequent presence in 20th century poets. What I propose to call “antibraquistiquio”, according to Antonio Quilis’ terminology (Estructura del encabalgamiento en la métrica española: contribución a su estudio experimental. Instituto Miguel de Cervantes, Madrid, 1964) but not to his definition, is a kind of enjambement identical to French “contre-rejet” and it has no name in Spanish metrical tradition. After its definition and the proposal of “antibraquistiquio” as its name, I proceed to pay attention to its stylistic effects in representative Spanish poets of the 20th Century. In order to do so, I argue that the “antibraquistiquio” belongs to a kind of enjambement that I call “prospective”, i. e. a structure that shows the reader that there will be enjambement from the first line involved in the process, in contrast with “retrospective” estructures. It is from here that the main effect of the “antibraquistiquio” derives: to display the ambiguity of the linguistic chain included in it so that it is made to belong to two different sense patterns at one time.
