Thermal stresses in the work rolls of hot-strip mills

  • Published:
Metallurgist Aims and scope

The operational reliability of hot-strip mills is determined to a large extent by the thermal and residual stresses in them. Results obtained from experimental and theoretical studies are used to derive approximate relations for evaluating the temperature over the cross section of the work rolls of these mills. Other relations are obtained to calculate the thermal and residual stresses. An improvement in the water-cooling regimes made it possible to increase the durability of the rolls on the 700 × 1300 strip mill at the Moscow Nonferrous Metals Plant.
