Abstract
A self-synchronized phase averaging has been applied to unconditional acquired, time resolved PIV velocity fields to analyze the unsteady flow in the base region of a rectangular cylinder immersed in a free surface water flow. The implemented phase averaging technique does not need any external reference signal and it allowed to reconstruct a complete cycle of the evolutionary mechanism of alternate vortex shedding from the trailing edges of the cylinder. The obtained phase-averaged flow fields showed a good description of the vortex shedding process; a quantitative description of the wake evolution have been made by means of topological analysis of the phase averaged velocity fields.
