Abstract
Lead and vanadium are known retarder of cement setting. However, during the tests conducted in the laboratory, it was discovered the uncommon effect of this metals, i.e., they accelerated cement to set. This was caused by ettringite crystallization, because the alite was covered by an impermeable layer formed probably the amorphous hydroxides of these metals. The examination was shown that the used industrial cement containing natural anhydrite as cement set regular and the clinker in this cement had very low content of sulfates. The determination of the concentration of sulfate ions in the cement paste pore solution has shown that it was very low at the beginning of hydration, because of the low rate of anhydrite dissolution. The conclusion of this study was that the influence of these two heavy metals is dependent on the sulfate ions concentration in the cement paste pore solution. The addition of 0.5% mass of hemihydrate to the cement caused the normal retarding effect of lead and vanadium.
