Abstract

In continuation of our previous research on aqueous systems containing ionic liquids and saccharides, we focus on the ternary {ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [Bmim][BF4]) + galactose/xylose + water} mixtures. For this purpose, from measured density data, apparent molar volumes \(V_{\varphi }\), apparent specific volumes, \(V_{\text{as}}\), apparent molar volumes at infinite dilution \(V_{\varphi }^{{\text{o}}}\), transfer volumes \(\Delta_{{\text{t}}} V_{\varphi }^{{\text{o}}}\) and also apparent molar expansibility \(E_{\varphi }^{{\text{o}}}\) for 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [Bmim][BF4]) in aqueous galactose or xylose solutions have been calculated. By using these properties, we describe the solute–solute and solute–solvent interactions which exist in these systems, and also the effect of IL [Bmim][BF4] on taste behavior of aqueous galactose and xylose solutions that are mainly discussed in the present research.
