Microstructural, dielectric, and microwave absorption properties of polyvinyl chloride/Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide composites

Abstract

In this paper, Mg/Al-Layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized via modified co-precipitation method. Composites containing the attained LDH and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were acquired in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. In particular, XRD revealed the successfulness of LDH dispersion in the PVC matrix. Furthermore, the variation of dielectric properties demonstrated that LDH has the ability to alter the PVC property from medium loss to a high loss material. This in turn leads to higher shielding effectiveness phenomena, in which an increment in the \({\text{SE}}_{{\text{R}}}\) and \({\text{SE}}_{{\text{A}}}\) from 2.37 and 7.68 to 3.46 and 9.74 dB for PVC and PVC/LDH 75% wt, respectively, was preserved. This in turn indicates a higher absorption profile of PVC after utilizing LDH as additive. The findings of this study indicate that the proposed PVC/LDH material has a sounded potential to be applied in microwave absorption applications.
