Characteristics of the stress-strain state and seasonal temperature openings of joints on the downstream face of a concrete dam are analyzed for severe climatic conditions. The width of the joint opening is evaluated as a function of the amount of reinforcement and the spacing between joints. Characteristics of the reinforcement of the downstream face of the dam are examined as a function of its functional purpose: the downstream face of the dead-end section, stepped spillway face, and the locations of the abutments of the reinforced-concrete structures. A reinforcement scheme is proposed for the stepped spillway face to minimize temperature-induced stresses owing to freedom of the deformation of the concrete between construction joints.
