Synthesis of 2-Arylidene-3-Oxo-Derivatives of Glycyrrhetic Acid

Claisen–Schmidt reactions of 3-oxoglycyrrhetic acid with aromatic aldehydes in EtOH–NaOH (4N) synthesized 2-arylidene-3-oxo-derivatives in 65–70% yields. The structures of the compounds were confirmed by PMR and 13C NMR spectra using 2D correlation methods.
