A new isochroman derivative, erythro-2-methyl-5-hydroxyphenylpropane-7,8-diol (1), and three known compounds including of (4S)-4,8-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-naphthalen-1-one (2), (4S)-4,6,8-trihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-naphthalen-1-one (3), and chrysogeside D (4), were isolated from Microsphaeropsis arundinis. Compounds 3 and 4 were first found in Microsphaeropsis. The antibacterial, antiphytopathogenic, and antioxidant activities of these compounds were evaluated. Compounds 1 and 4 inhibited Alternaria tenuissima, a pathogenic fungus causing root rot of Panax notoginseng with MICs at 64 μg/mL, which showed the ecological function of the endophyte for its host plant.
