Flavonoids and Phenolic Compounds from Smilax scobinicaulis

  • Published:
Chemistry of Natural Compounds Aims and scope

Phytochemical investigation of the ethyl acetate soluble extract from the rhizomes and roots of Smilax scobinicaulis resulted in the isolation of two new polymethoxylated flavones, namely 7,3′,5′-trihydroxy-5,6,4′-trimethoxyflavone (1) and 7-hydroxy-5,6,3′,4′,5′-pentamethoxyflavone (2), along with 17 known compounds (319) . Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral data. The in vitro cytotoxicity evaluation of the new compounds demonstrated that compound 1 showed weak activity to the tested MCF-7 and H520 cancer cell lines with IC50 values of 65.1 and 82.0 μM, respectively, while compound 2 was found to be inactive to both cell lines.
