A new pyrrolidine derivative, 3-hydroxy-1-(4-hydroxyphenethyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione (1), was isolated from the CHCl3 extract of the rhizome of Coptis chinensis Franch. Its structure was characterized by extensive spectrometric methods, including 1D, 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS.
