Abstract

The use of fiber reinforced composites in dentistry is increasing due to its superior biomechanical properties. This study aimed to characterize the kenaf fiber reinforced nanohybrid dental composites derived from rice husk. Kenaf cellulose was treated with tetraethyl orthosilicate sol–gel which was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The experimental composites were fabricated using rice husk silica and kenaf cellulose at 1 wt% and 2 wt% and subjected for flexural and compressive strength tests. Fractured samples were examined using SEM. FTIR results suggested Si–O–C and Si–O–Si were formed on the cellulose surface at post-treatment. The flexural strength of the experimental composite was improved as the fiber load was increased. The composite with 2 wt% treated kenaf fibers showed higher compressive strength than the commercial composite groups. SEM analysis depicted fewer voids between matrix and kenaf fibers. In conclusion, 2 wt% fiber reinforced nanohybrid dental composites was successfully characterized and demonstrated a potential application in dental restorative material.
