Abstract
This paper examines and attempts to clear the hype and confusion surrounding Grid computing. A working definition is provided together with some historical context regarding the development of the technology and its role in the more general computing environment. Factors affecting the types of application most suited to benefit from the application of Grid computing are described. The current standards landscape is discussed and at the end of the paper some current industrial success stories are presented to illustrate the value of this technology.
