This formulation is due to my colleague Fred Adler.
As I say here this discussion goes by very quickly in Okasha’s book and also Okasha focuses on Sterelny and Kitcher but not on Waters (See e.g. 1991), who goes to some lengths to defend the alleles as environment view. A related criticism to the one made here is made by Elisabeth Lloyd (2005; Lloyd and Feldman et al. Forthcoming).
