A Diamond-like Coating on a Metal Bracket

  • Published:
Biomedical Engineering Aims and scope

A ta-C coating on a metal bracket made of medical steel 12Kh18N10T was studied. The advantages and disadvantages of the coating were considered. X-Ray phase analysis, scanning electron microscopy, microhardness measurements, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis of the bracket surface were conducted to study the structure and basic physical and mechanical properties of the coating. It was found that the coating increases the hardness of the bracket by a factor of 5.5. However, excessive hardness of the diamond-like layer increases the brittleness of the bracket.
