A new generation of laser interference microscopes – modulation interference microscopes (MIM) – was developed for 3-D imaging of geometric parameters of the surface microrelief of the object of microscopy. The resolution of MIM along the vertical axis is 0.1 nm; in the object plane, 10–100 nm. The aspects of use of interference microscopy for studying the morphology and dynamics of biological objects are discussed.
