The special issue is a result of cooperation and support of a large number of people and many organizations (BICTAM, CISM, International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Tsinghua University, and University of Udine). Furthermore, we would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all people who have contributed to the success of this issue directly or indirectly. At the outset, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all the authors who have submitted their research findings in the form of articles to the journal and to the reviewers for devoting their valuable time in the review process. We also appreciate the efforts of the authors in revising their papers in keeping with the constraints set in order to make the topical collection of papers be launched in 2022.

Additional information
Cristian Marchioli is Associate Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Udine, where he coordinates the PhD program in Energy and Environmental Engineering Sciences. Editor of Acta Mechanica, he is the coordinator of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action COMETE (“Next-Generation Computational Methods for Enhanced Multiphase Flow Processes”, and served as chairman of the COST Action “Fiber suspension flow modeling”). Currently, Prof. Marchioli sits in the scientific council of the International Center of Mechanical Sciences, where he coordinated several advanced schools on particles in turbulence over the last decade. His research interests involve multiphase flow modeling, from small-scale particle-turbulence interactions to large-scale modeling of gas-solid/gas-liquid flows. Prof. Marchioli has published 60+ papers and 150+ conference proceedings. He has also delivered several invited and keynote lectures at international conferences.
Lihao Zhao is Associate Professor in Fluid Mechanics at Tsinghua University and deputy head of the Fluid Mechanics Institute of School of Aerospace Engineering of Tsinghua University. He was the finalist of “Da Vinci Award: Best European Doctoral Thesis on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion” (silver medalist) sponsored by the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion in 2012 and selected in the National Young Talents Program in 2016. He is interested in on multiphase flow modelling and simulations and has 70+ journal publications, one of which on particles in wall turbulence was featured in a “Focus on Fluids” article of Journal of Fluid Mechanics. He serves as editorial advisory board member in the International Journal of Multiphase Flow, Acta Mechanica, and Acta Mechanica Sinica etc.
