Interventional bronchoscopy in children

Abstract

Interventional procedures for the diagnosis and therapy of respiratory diseases are also possible in children; however, the application is restricted by the dimensions of pediatric airways and the brief tolerance of apnea. Because the airway in children will continuously grow, stents remain an option only in palliative situations or postoperatively for a short period of time. In spite of these restrictions and the complications that may occur, interventional techniques are a useful extension of the therapeutic armamentarium of pediatric pulmonology. Their application is restricted to experienced centers and require intensive care back-up.
